for Osteoporosis
Bisphosphonates are the most commonly prescribed medications for osteoporosis — reducing bone resorption and significantly decreasing fracture risk in both the spine and hip.
How it works
Incorporate into bone matrix at sites of active resorption, where they are taken up by osteoclasts and inhibit their resorptive activity. Shift the remodelling balance toward net bone gain.
What to watch for
Prescription only — GP or specialist managed. Must be taken correctly (sitting upright, with full glass of water, remaining upright for 30 minutes). Oesophageal irritation possible. Rare osteonecrosis of the jaw risk. Dental assessment before starting is recommended. Calcium and vitamin D must be adequate.
