Caffeine Reduction

for Panic Attacks

Caffeine is an adenosine antagonist and CNS stimulant that directly increases heart rate, produces mild anxiety, and can trigger or worsen panic attacks in sensitive individuals.

How it works

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, increasing noradrenaline and cortisol. Produces physical symptoms (racing heart, jitteriness) that can be catastrophically misinterpreted by those with panic disorder.

What to watch for

Gradual reduction is preferable to abrupt cessation — caffeine withdrawal itself produces headaches and fatigue. Even moderate intake (2 cups/day) can worsen panic in sensitive individuals.
