Calcium is directly involved in the muscle contraction mechanism; deficiency can cause muscle cramps. Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption and neuromuscular function.
How it works
Calcium triggers muscle contraction at the troponin-tropomyosin complex. Hypocalcaemia causes increased membrane excitability and spontaneous cramping (tetany in severe cases). Vitamin D deficiency reduces calcium absorption and impairs neuromuscular function.
What to watch for
Recommended intakes: 1000β1300mg calcium/day (preferably from food) and 800β2000 IU vitamin D/day. High-dose calcium supplements (>500mg/day) without meals may increase cardiovascular risk. Food-first approach preferred.
