How it works

Tinnitus distress is driven more by psychological response than sound intensity. CBT reduces catastrophising, improves coping and reduces the emotional impact of tinnitus.

Does not reduce tinnitus volume. Targets distress and quality of life. Available as therapist-led, group or digital programmes.

Why strong evidence

Strong evidence from multiple RCTs. NICE and British Tinnitus Association recommend CBT as the primary psychological intervention for tinnitus distress.

β€œSome improvement but not as dramatic as I hoped. Might need longer to see full benefit. Still continuing.”
