Clindamycin Vaginal Cream
for Bacterial Vaginosis
A 2 percent clindamycin cream inserted vaginally at bedtime for 7 days (or clindamycin ovules for 3 days). An alternative first-line option, especially for those who cannot tolerate metronidazole.
How it works
Clindamycin is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, reducing the anaerobic bacterial overgrowth associated with BV.
What to watch for
Prescription only. The cream is oil-based and can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms for up to 5 days after use; use alternative contraception or barrier protection during this window. Some studies show slightly lower long-term cure rates than metronidazole. Not the preferred option in pregnancy per CDC guidance, which favors oral or vaginal metronidazole.
