Corticosteroid Injection

for Tennis Elbow

Corticosteroid injection at the lateral epicondyle provides rapid short-term pain relief but has inferior long-term outcomes compared to physiotherapy.

How it works

Reduces peritendinous inflammation and neural sensitisation at the lateral epicondyle. Short-term pain relief facilitates return to activity but does not address the underlying tendinopathy.

What to watch for

Multiple RCTs show injection superior to wait-and-see at 6 weeks but inferior to physiotherapy at 12+ months, with higher recurrence rates. Use judiciously — limit to 1–2 injections. Must be combined with loading programme.
