Denosumab (Prolia)

for Osteoporosis

Denosumab is a biologic injection given 6-monthly for osteoporosis — highly effective for reducing fracture risk, particularly in post-menopausal women and those who cannot tolerate bisphosphonates.

How it works

Monoclonal antibody against RANK ligand (RANKL), inhibiting osteoclast formation and activity. Provides potent bone resorption inhibition comparable to bisphosphonates but with a different mechanism.

What to watch for

Prescription and specialist managed. Critical: must not be stopped abruptly — discontinuation can cause rapid bone loss and rebound vertebral fractures. Transition to bisphosphonate is needed on stopping. Infection risk.
