for Acid Reflux
A processed form of licorice root with the blood-pressure-raising glycyrrhizin removed, used as a chewable supplement to soothe the oesophageal and gastric mucosa.
How it works
DGL stimulates mucus secretion from gastric epithelial cells, increasing the protective mucus layer that shields the oesophagus and stomach from acid damage. May also reduce H. pylori adhesion.
What to watch for
Must be the deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) form to avoid hypertension and electrolyte effects of regular licorice. Chew tablets before meals. Evidence is mostly from older small studies.
