How it works
Proposed to mimic the information processing of REM sleep, allowing traumatic memories to be integrated rather than stored in a fragmented, intrusion-prone form. Exact mechanism remains debated.
Must be delivered by an EMDR-trained therapist. The bilateral stimulation component is debated — some evidence suggests it is the trauma exposure itself, not the eye movements, that drives benefit.
Finding a practitioner
Seek a qualified and registered practitioner. In Australia, check AHPRA (ahpra.gov.au) for registered health practitioners including physiotherapists, psychologists, and Chinese medicine practitioners.
