for Fatigue
Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) involves a structured, gradually increasing programme of physical activity tailored to a person's current capacity, aiming to restore normal activity tolerance.
How it works
Addresses deconditioning and autonomic dysfunction that can perpetuate fatigue. Gradual increase in activity rebuilds cardiovascular fitness and reduces effort perception at a given workload.
What to watch for
Highly controversial and potentially harmful for ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) — GET is no longer recommended for ME/CFS by NICE (2021 guidelines). Appropriate for fatigue from deconditioning but requires professional guidance and careful pacing.
