Interoceptive Exposure

for Panic Attacks

Interoceptive exposure deliberately induces feared physical sensations (dizziness, racing heart, breathlessness) in a controlled setting to desensitise the fear response to those sensations.

How it works

Breaks the conditioned fear association between internal body sensations and danger. Repeated voluntary exposure without catastrophe disconfirms the catastrophic prediction and reduces anxiety sensitivity.

What to watch for

Should be conducted with a trained therapist, at least initially. Exercises include spinning in a chair, running on the spot, breathing through a coffee straw. Distressing but highly effective.
