How it works

Promotes alpha brain wave activity (associated with relaxed alertness) and modulates GABA and glutamate neurotransmission. Does not cause drowsiness at standard doses.

Generally very safe. May potentiate sedative medications. Most research uses 200mg doses. The caffeine-and-L-theanine combination is more studied than L-theanine alone.

Why limited evidence

Several small RCTs show significant reduction in acute anxiety and stress response. Larger trials needed. Effect sizes are modest but consistent.
