Lactulose (Osmotic Laxative)

for Constipation

A synthetic non-absorbable osmotic laxative available without prescription for short-term constipation relief.

How it works

Lactulose is fermented by colonic bacteria to lactic and acetic acids, lowering colonic pH and drawing water into the bowel osmotically, softening and bulking stools.

What to watch for

May cause bloating and flatulence, especially initially. Not for galactosaemia. Long-term use should be reviewed by a doctor.
