How it works

Acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, reducing central sensitisation that amplifies chronic pain. Supports muscle relaxation by competing with calcium at muscle fiber level. Deficiency increases substance P and pain sensitivity.

Most relevant when deficiency is suspected (common in chronic pain patients). Glycinate or malate forms are better tolerated than oxide. Evidence specific to back pain is limited — most data from general chronic pain.
