How it works
Magnesium ions in the gut retain water by osmosis, increasing stool water content and stimulating peristalsis. Also relaxes smooth muscle in the intestinal wall.
Can cause loose stools or cramps at high doses. Avoid with significant renal impairment. Long-term use at high doses requires medical supervision. Magnesium citrate is better absorbed and gentler than oxide.
