How it works

Reduces pain catastrophising and emotional reactivity to pain. Decreases the self-referential processing in the default mode network that amplifies chronic pain. Builds acceptance and functional engagement despite pain.

The landmark 2016 JAMA study showed MBSR outperformed usual care. Best combined with physical rehabilitation. Not a cure for structural back problems but highly effective for the suffering component.
