An 8-week structured mindfulness programme teaching patients to change their relationship with tinnitus — reducing emotional distress rather than trying to eliminate the sound.
How it works
MBSR activates prefrontal cortex regulation of the amygdala and limbic system, reducing the conditioned fear response to tinnitus. Also decreases sympathetic activation which amplifies tinnitus perception.
What to watch for
Requires commitment to regular practice (30–45 minutes daily). Best delivered by trained instructor, though apps and online programmes are available.
