Melatonin

for Migraine

A hormone your body naturally produces at night to trigger sleepiness, available as a supplement to help you fall asleep faster. Take 0.5-3 mg about 30-60 minutes before bed, starting on the lower end as more is not always better. Particularly useful when sleep timing has been disrupted by jet lag or shift work.

How it works

Melatonin regulates circadian rhythms and may reduce cortical excitability. It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Particularly relevant when migraines are associated with disrupted sleep-wake cycles.

What to watch for

Evidence is low certainty. Not recommended for long-term use without medical supervision. May cause daytime drowsiness. Take 30–60 minutes before sleep. Not established for paediatric migraine without specialist guidance.
