Oral NSAIDs provide moderate pain relief for acute and chronic low back pain and are recommended as first-line pharmacological therapy when paracetamol is insufficient.
How it works
COX inhibition reduces prostaglandin-mediated pain sensitisation. Anti-inflammatory effects may benefit back pain with a significant inflammatory component.
What to watch for
Use lowest effective dose for shortest duration. Not effective for all types of back pain — those with primarily muscle or nerve components respond less well. Long-term use associated with GI, cardiovascular, and renal risks.
