Low-dose topical vaginal oestrogen cream applied to restore the vaginal microbiome and epithelial barrier in post-menopausal women with recurrent UTIs.
How it works
Post-menopausal oestrogen decline causes vaginal atrophy and loss of Lactobacillus colonisation, increasing urinary pH and pathogen adherence. Topical oestrogen reverses these changes.
What to watch for
Requires prescription. Topical application results in minimal systemic absorption, suitable for many women who cannot take systemic HRT. Not for women with certain hormone-sensitive cancers.
