Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA)

for Depression

High-dose EPA-dominant omega-3 supplementation has evidence as an adjunct treatment for depression, particularly for those with elevated inflammation markers.

How it works

EPA modulates inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoid production. Depression is associated with elevated inflammation in a subset of patients, and omega-3s may address this neuroinflammatory component.

What to watch for

High doses (>3g/day) may increase bleeding risk. Choose EPA-dominant formulas (EPA:DHA ratio ≥2:1). Evidence is strongest as an add-on to antidepressants, not as monotherapy.
