Oral Metronidazole
for Bacterial Vaginosis
A prescription antibiotic taken by mouth, most commonly 500mg twice daily for 7 days. It is one of the two first-line treatments recommended by the CDC for bacterial vaginosis.
How it works
Metronidazole is active against the anaerobic bacteria (such as Gardnerella vaginalis and other anaerobes) that overgrow in BV, while generally sparing protective Lactobacillus species, allowing the vaginal flora to rebalance.
What to watch for
Prescription only. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 24 to 48 hours after, due to risk of a severe nausea and vomiting reaction. Common side effects include metallic taste, nausea and mild gastrointestinal upset. Considered safe in pregnancy per CDC guidance but should be prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Complete the full course even if symptoms resolve early. Recurrence within 3 months is common (around 30 percent) and does not mean the antibiotic failed.
