Peppermint Oil (Topical)

for Migraine

Topical application of diluted peppermint oil to the temples and forehead for tension-type and mild migraine relief. Some RCT evidence supports effectiveness for acute relief. Apply diluted only — do not use undiluted on skin.

How it works

Menthol, the active compound in peppermint oil, activates TRPM8 cold receptors and inhibits serotonin receptor signalling. It also improves peripheral blood flow and reduces frontalis muscle tension.

What to watch for

Must be diluted before skin application (typically 10% in a carrier oil) — do not apply undiluted. Avoid contact with eyes. Not suitable for use near young children or infants.
