How it works

Modulates the gut microbiome, reduces systemic Th2-skewed immune responses, and may decrease IgE-mediated sensitisation relevant to atopic dermatitis.

Results are strain-specific β€” most evidence is for L. rhamnosus GG and L. reuteri. Mixed results in adults. More evidence in infants and children with atopic disease.

Why limited evidence

Cochrane review 2018 found modest benefit for eczema severity with specific probiotic strains, but heterogeneity is high and effect sizes are modest.

β€œSome improvement but not as dramatic as I hoped. Might need longer to see full benefit. Still continuing.”
