How it works
Absorbs water in the gut to form a viscous gel, bulking and softening stool and stimulating peristaltic movement.
Must be taken with at least 240ml of water — without adequate fluid can cause choking or worsen constipation. Can reduce absorption of some medications — take separately.
Systematic reviews confirm psyllium is highly effective for chronic constipation and is preferred over stimulant laxatives for long-term use.
