Sertraline / SSRIs for PTSD

SSRIs (sertraline, paroxetine) are the only FDA-approved medications for PTSD and are used to reduce symptom severity, particularly when trauma-focused therapy is not immediately accessible or tolerated.
How it works
Reduces amygdala hyperreactivity and intrusive memory processing through serotonergic modulation. May also improve sleep and reduce hypervigilance.
What to watch for
Prescription only. Medications treat symptoms but do not process trauma — most guidelines recommend trauma-focused therapy as primary treatment with medications as adjunct. Paroxetine and sertraline have the most evidence.
