How it works
Increase synaptic serotonin (SSRIs) or serotonin and norepinephrine (SNRIs). Reduce amygdala hyperreactivity and improve prefrontal regulation of fear responses over weeks.
What to watch for
Require a prescription. Initial worsening of anxiety possible in weeks 1–2 — start at half dose. Do not stop abruptly. Sexual side effects are common. May take 6–8 weeks for full benefit.
