Antidepressants that are first-line pharmacological treatment for most anxiety disorders. Effective for generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and PTSD.

How it works

Increase synaptic serotonin (SSRIs) or serotonin and norepinephrine (SNRIs). Reduce amygdala hyperreactivity and improve prefrontal regulation of fear responses over weeks.

What to watch for

Require a prescription. Initial worsening of anxiety possible in weeks 1–2 — start at half dose. Do not stop abruptly. Sexual side effects are common. May take 6–8 weeks for full benefit.
