for Panic Attacks
SSRIs (e.g. sertraline, paroxetine, escitalopram) and SNRIs (e.g. venlafaxine) are the recommended pharmacological treatment for panic disorder, reducing attack frequency and anticipatory anxiety.
How it works
Serotonin enhancement reduces amygdala hyperreactivity and lowers the threshold for the autonomic alarm response. Full benefit requires 4–6 weeks at therapeutic dose.
What to watch for
Prescription only. Paradoxically, SSRIs can temporarily increase anxiety and panic frequency in the first 1–2 weeks — start at low dose and titrate slowly. Do not stop abruptly.
