for Depression
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most studied herbal treatments for depression, with a long tradition of use in European herbal medicine.
How it works
Active constituents hypericin and hyperforin inhibit reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline. Flavonoids may also contribute to GABA modulation.
What to watch for
Interacts significantly with many medications including antidepressants, oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, and HIV medications. Not safe to combine with SSRIs — risk of serotonin syndrome. Consult a pharmacist before use.
