How it works
Diclofenac penetrates to deep tissue via skin, inhibiting COX enzymes locally and achieving therapeutic concentrations in paraspinal muscle and joint tissue.
Less effective than oral NSAIDs for severe or deep-seated pain. Not for broken or inflamed skin. Apply to the painful area 3β4 times daily. Available OTC.
Cochrane review found topical NSAIDs reduce pain significantly compared to placebo with fewer GI side effects than oral NSAIDs. Evidence specifically for back pain is moderate quality.
