How it works

Vitamin C supports multiple immune functions including neutrophil and lymphocyte activity. During infection, plasma vitamin C is rapidly depleted by the metabolic demands of immune response.

Regular supplementation reduces cold duration by about 8% in adults (14% in children). Does not prevent colds in the general population. May reduce severity.

Why strong evidence

Cochrane review of 29 trials found regular vitamin C supplementation does not prevent colds but modestly reduces duration and severity.
