How it works
Dehydration draws water from the colon into the bloodstream, hardening stool. Adequate hydration maintains stool softness and supports normal bowel function.
Most beneficial in people who are under-hydrated. Excessive water intake beyond normal requirements does not further improve constipation.
Strong mechanistic evidence. Dehydration is a recognised cause of constipation. Consistent clinical recommendation but direct RCT evidence is limited.
