How it works

Zinc ions released in the oral cavity may inhibit rhinovirus replication and binding to nasal epithelial cells, and have local anti-inflammatory effects.

Must be started within 24 hours of symptom onset to be effective. Use lozenges not tablets or capsules β€” the zinc must be released in the mouth and throat. Can cause nausea and metallic taste.

Why moderate evidence

Meta-analyses show zinc lozenges started within 24 hours reduce cold duration by approximately 1–2 days. Evidence is consistent but effect varies by formulation.
